Did Atlantis exist? We may never know. On the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands there is a huge volcanic crater some feel may hold the clue to the existence of Atlantis. But Lanzarote is more than just a clue in the mystery of Atlantis; it is also a fabulous place for a holiday. Its position on the northwest coast of Africa means it is blessed with beautiful weather. The island also has lots of intriguing natural formations and some of the best beaches anywhere, Planning Lanzarote holidays? Prepare to be impressed!
Timanfaya National Park is the first place visitors to Lanzarote want to see and with good reason. The park is spectacular. One of the major features is the incredible ‘Tunnel of Atlantis’ that some speculate is related to the disappearance of the ancient island. The Tunnel of Atlantis in Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote is the largest underground volcanic tunnel in the world and is an amazing site. This tunnels through which hundreds of thousands of gallons of molten lava once rushed is visually stunning. For many this stop is the whole trip.
Those who leave Lanzarote after seeing Timanfaya National Park miss a lot. There is the Jameos (Bubbles). Jameos del Agua in the Cueva del los Verdes at the foot of the Corona volcano is unbelievable. It contains a lake that is home to the blind albino Remipedia crab. There is also a 500 seat concert hall carved right into a cave. The acoustics are out of this world. Jameo Grande holds a beautiful garden, a large pool, a huge dancefloor and two restaurants built into the surrounding rock.
The Vineyards of La Geria is another must see. The vineyards are made of single vines planted in a 4-5 meter wide pit surrounded by a small stone wall. The wall helps to capture the rainwater and the dew and protects the vines from the winds on the volcanic Lapilli.
Your Lanzarote holidays are not complete until you hit the beach. Lanzarote has fantastic beaches. The resort areas of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are beautiful and well maintained. Both tourists and locals alike agree Papagayo in the south with its many coves and Famana in the north with miles of white sand are the best beaches on the island.
Everyone deserves Canary Islands Holidays at least once in their lives. This could be your time!
